This music video follows the conventions of media language for its genre and for its form. This video is partly performance and partly narrative, this is conventional in all music genres as it is an opportunity to show off the artist while at the same time keeping the audience engaged with a story to follow. Many extreme close ups are used in this video, especially on the acoustic guitar. This highlights the performance elements in the video while conforming to the indie folk genre which is known for the use of acoustic guitars. The camera is handheld throughout the majority of this video; this could connote confusion or uneasiness or on the other hand could just be trying to recreate the human eye to make the audience feel as though they were in the set.

There is a slow motion edit on the river, this technique is used a lot in the indie genre as it slows the pace of the video and gives a more calm and relaxed impression while maybe being used to also match the pace of the song. Continuity edits are used to simplify the narrative and make the story easy to understand especially if there isn’t an obvious plot to the narrative.

There has been a mixture of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds in the video. The acoustic guitar playing at the beginning is diegetic to reinforce the performance side and to draw attention to the artist, however after this all the other music in non-diegetic and the focus is drawn to the narrative instead of the performer.

A man and woman feature in the music video, this is very conventional of the form as most videos appeal to the audience through the representation of a traditional heterosexual relationship. The use of both a male and female will sexually appeal to both genders and sexualities and perhaps bring a wider audience and will fit more aspects of the uses and gratification theory. For example, the close ups of the girl's face can be seen as voyeurism to attract a male audience where the target may be more aimed towards women.

  The use of wild animals in the video reinforces the nature aspect and appeal to primal instincts. You see this a lot in the indie genre that focus’ more on the simplicity of nature than material items like cars and money.

Props used include a back pack which would connote that the artist is on a journey. This genre uses the idea of ‘journeys’ a lot as it gives a simple yet affective narrative. In one shot the man is seen dropping an apple, this could resemble newton finding his theory of gravity and could reflect that the man is making his own discoveries on his personal journey. 

The use of a graphic match that show repetitive shots of the artist's hands is also very conventional of the Indie Folk genre. The shot being specifically of his hands throughout the narrative shots, draws the audiences attention back to the performance shots where the artist is playing the guitar. This is done purposely so that the audience notice his talent (his ability to make music not only to sing but to play too). Further more this shows that the artist wants to be known for his talent and not for fancy advertising or promotional videos or even his looks (hence why the face is shown less). This is a common ideology of the Indie Folk genre that they want to be noticed for substance over style, contradicting the post modern idea that appearance is valued over function.

The fire shows the heat between the male and female and could resemble their love growing like the flames. -A bear is in a shot; this again shows nature and our relation to animals, primal instincts.	- Slow edits, matching the beat of the song set a calm and peaceful mood. - Continuity editing, linear to tell a clear narrative. -very long period of time between shots to show time is moving slowly and reinforces continuity. -Quicker edits when the woman finds the man, resembling a heartbeat getting faster. -Screen turns to black and white, conventional of the genre, also reflects the narrative that life is made clearer when you find the right person. -Fade between shots to show how the shots flow into each other, gives a sense of slowness as well.	- Not many instruments, mainly voice and acoustic guitar, conventional of the genre. -Non Diegetic sound, not a performance narrative.

This music video conforms greatly to the conventions of the genre ‘indie folk’ and of formal conventions that are seen in most music videos. There are lots of close ups on the woman and her body, this reinforces the idea of voyeurism and Laura Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze that women are there to be looked at by males and for women to envy. In the sense of the narrative, the close ups are to show the natural and plain beauty of the woman. There are very slow edits, it reflects the sense of time and also the peaceful mood of the song, this is also reinforced with the use of many pans, tilts and tracks which last longer than still shots and keep the attention of the viewer for longer. The edits then get faster as the beat gets faster or the story in the narrative comes to a climax. It could also connote the woman’s heartbeat getting faster when she sees the male, reinforcing the love story narrative.

The woman and man are both wearing white in the video; this connotes purity and shows that they are both protagonists. The woman in the video is not wearing any shoes to show that humans don’t need material items, we only need nature. This is conventional of the genre as it refers to nature a lot in their music videos and also shows the lack of interest in money and materialistic things, Indie Folk artists like to concentrate purely on the music, not the not the fame or media attention that comes with successful song writing. The sound is non-diegetic and there is not a performance in the narrative, this draws the focus to the story instead of the performer or artist which isn’t conventional for genres such as pop, however it is seen more in the indie genre. This helps the audience to understand the true meaning behind the lyrics. There is a long shot of the man and woman on side profile and they walk together to meet in the middle, this is a formal convention as it is seen in many genres and also many forms. It gives a sense of equality between the couple.

The video is set in woodland which is extremely conventional of the genre as it usually includes nature. The fire is also conventional of the genre as it is a natural element and reflects the narrative with the idea that their love resembles the growing flames. The video is edited to black and white; this gives the video an artistic and contemporary look and is used a lot in the indie genre, specifically indie rock.

This music video consists of many formal and genre conventions to appeal to a specific audience. The performer, in this case Frank Turner has taken on the main role in his narrative, this is a formal convention as the music video’s purpose is more to advertise the artist than the music itself. The sound used is generally non diegetic and out of the narrative until Frank starts miming, then it becomes diegetic. This is conventional for the indie folk genre as most intertwine the narrative with performance elements. The non-diegetic sound of the acoustic guitar is very conventional of the genre as indie folk are heavily associated with acoustic and live performances. The lyrics in the song guide the narrative; it is not abstract or completely unrelated. This is usual for most genres as it is easier to sense the mood and meaning to the song.

The mise en scene in this video is very conventional for indie folk. Frank is wearing neutral colours and the video is set outside in open spaces surrounded by nature, this reflects the ideology that indie folk is one of the most natural forms of music as it is simplistic, often only using an acoustic guitar, there is no electrics or editing to the sound therefore it is seen as purer and natural. Frank has a beard and has tattoos which are seen a lot on the artists of this genre, it is a sign of the modern era. It seems quite manly and strong for men to dress like this in most genres but especially the indie genres; it shows they aren’t as clean cut as males from the pop genre etc.

In the video Frank is seen walking up a hill and looking back on how far he has walked. It is conventional of the indie folk genre to include a journey in the narrative, generally an emotional journey about love or yourself. It makes the video more relatable. The camera used is handheld so the picture is quite shaky. You wouldn’t see this in pop videos or R&B but you would in indie folk. It shows imperfections or displays the mood in the narrative which is usually fairly negative in this genre. There are lots of close ups and medium close ups in this video. It is a formal convention and is seen in the majority of music videos. It reinforces the idea that the video is meant simply to advertise the artist and there are close ups whether or not the artist is performing.

The editing in this video is consistent and matches the beat of the song; this is conventional of all music genres as it gives order and makes more sense. It makes the video fit the song better and is just easier to watch. There is continuity editing that is often seen in indie folk as this genre likes to tell a story in the narrative which is usually simplistic and has a simple meaning that it is trying to get across.
